Review of South Park: The Fractured But Whole – Serious RPG

Turn based RPG – hardly the most popular genre, but the solution Obsidian Entertainment was quite deliberate: when it comes to such an unusual source, as a cult animated series South Park, choose a trivial genre like a platformer would be an insult to all his fans. In many ways, so the first part was an unexpected hit, delighting fans of the series and RPG fans. The second part with vigorous title South Park: The Fractured But Whole came out in late 2017 and only now – on the platform Nintendo Switch. Is it a worthy sequel?

In a nutshell, Yes. The game designers decided not to reinvent the wheel, and only to improve already successful formula, inherited from their predecessors (because at this time the developer performs Ubisoft San Francisco). The main change occurred in the plot, or rather ideas, which mocked at this time. Last time a got fans of the Lord of the rings and other fantasy works, and now for fans of comics and movies about superheroes. Long overdue.

Yes, South Park (also known as “South Park”) was always a nice ability to take a popular trend to make fun of him. With games the creation of Matt stone and Trey Parker ties a lot, because over the long life of the series our heroes as children, faced with the mass hysteria associated with the release of a new console (remember only Cartman and “its Nintendo”), and with the popularity of World of Warcraft and other MMORPGs.

Talented Studio understandably excited many, but fortunately, nothing bad happened. Moreover, it is difficult even to guess what the concept was developed by other people.

You can easily say that in every sense South Park: The Fractured But Whole is a better game than the first part. But does that mean it’s a good game, even great? Not at all. This paradox stems from the fact that the title is very niche, and it’s not even in the genre, and in the license. Despite the fact that the Park remains extremely popular IP, it was always not for everyone. The series is known for its rough and vulgar humor and swearing, therefore always deter many. Stone and Parker often masterful “hid” sharp satire under the facade of toilet jokes, but often the show was exactly what it seems to be an infantile attempt to insult everyone and everything in the animated format.

For this reason, the quality of South Park: The Fractured But Whole is very difficult to quantify. Outstanding modern turn-based RPG? Quite – if you like the series. But if you do not like, their license instantly devalues all the efforts of the creators. Downright tragic, given how many people don’t appreciate the game just because the Studio kept to the format laid down by the series.

If you like the series, then we have something to talk about. For any fan of South Park: The Fractured But Whole, like the first part is a real masterpiece and the clearest example of how to do fan service. From the most authentic panache that makes “South Park” the virtual is indistinguishable from the TV, and ending with the voice actors, everything here gives the impression that the cartoon was downright alive. It is definitely associated with wonderful Snowdrop engine, and basic art style, which is known to show.

Rejecting all attempts to insult dragons and dungeons, South Park: The Fractured But Whole began to scoff at comics, but this is done not only for the sake of numerous jokes, but that is the main theme for gameplay. Our hero (re-dubbed simply “the Rookie”) can choose one “person” (i.e. class), which gives him unique skills and abilities. The theme of heroes and their skills anywhere, from the plot to the combat system.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole also has ceased to be static during the battle – now during battles you can move around the grid, allowing the battles to be more dynamic and interesting. No, of course, do not expect a “serious” RPG, but for a licensed things South Park: The Fractured But Whole pleasantly surprises with its multi-layered.

Each character also has a Ultimate Attack is a special move. It can be used after the attack is charged, so you should reserve a reception for the toughest opponents. Other features – the ability to throw one enemy to another for increased damage. Among the main merits of the developers how they were able to make a very elaborate RPG, which, however, it is easy to learn even for beginners of the genre.

Another strong side of South Park: The Fractured But Whole lies in the world that is so vast and detailed as this you can only wish for. There’s a ton of hidden secrets and places to explore as well as a huge number of objects to collect. Now to find and collect you famous (fans) Member Berries and paintings in the style of yaoi. Did not disappoint, and a crafting system that allows you to combine a variety of subjects. There was even a social hierarchy, which can be influenced, making selfies with famous people.

I’m talking about the version for Nintendo Switch, but all of the above applies to any port. Speaking specifically about the features of the hybrid platform, then complain, not much. Being undemanding titles, is downright designed for portable, South Park: The Fractured But Whole works great without any brakes. Victims part of the graphics also there – again with the art style. Don’t forget that this is not the first game with Snowdrop engine on Switch – it has already been tested on the exclusive Mario + Kingdom Rabbids Battle.

The loading screen sometimes too slow, and are numerous but, in General, that’s all. Not to mention a significant bug related only to this version – if you log in to the mobile salon and start the mission Call Girl, then there is a loading screen that cannot be closed. Moreover, this bug is often completely erases all the save. No idea how this problem has eluded the beta testers. Anyway, Ubisoft has officially acknowledged the problem and promised to fix it next patch.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole Switch supports all DLC (already available for purchase and included in the “gold edition”), but when buying it for free to the first part (how is that possible on other consoles) is impossible due to the fact that South Park: The Stick of Truth came out for another platform, as established before. Therefore, the version Switch is again the most expensive.

So South Park is back in video game form. South Park: The Fractured But Whole still follows all the precepts of the series and still insulting everyone. She’s not afraid to make fun of and comment on the most pressing socio-political issues, and it all starts with the first screen to select the difficulty – if you choose the dark skin, to play harder, Very often the game is teetering on the brink of intelligent satire and childish parody. Good jokes mixed in with the bad – as in, for the hundredth time, the series. And if you’re not a fan of the cartoon and especially not a fan of gross humor, to advise the game I just can’t – a pleasant pastime will not work. But any fan of South Park should definitely buy it – in all senses is a worthy sequel.
